about

Prime Numbers is the first EP from the band Subtanks. The album is an uptempo, all-instrumental, riff-rock adventure of reflection, ragers, relationships, and resilience. The inspirations range from 90s console videogame nostalgia to Midwestern emo, mid-otts mathrock, and multiple forms of love and understanding.

Subtanks is the instrumental rock duo of Josh King and Asher Mendel. The pair met in 2005 in Saint Louis at Webster University, and have remained an active live and writing project since. Prime Numbers includes music written between 2007 and 2019, and it was recorded during the isolation of 2020 through 2022. The production was entirely remote between the bandmates, through video calls and click tracks spanning the divide between Kansas City, San Diego, and Oregon.

The album features guitar-focused melodies, jazzy bass solos, a blend of performed and programmed drums, and the occasional synth part for flavor. From reverb-drenched trances to indie-pop rock-outs, intimate reprieves to full-tilt thrashing, Prime Numbers spans the balance of nostalgia and maturation with both urgency and comfort. It is both a sign of the times and an atemporal access point to universal themes and human experience.

So throw it on! It makes for great driving music, a background beat to study to, and repeat, intentional listens that always offer something new.
